Pressurized sand filters

At I’mWATER, we design, manufacture, and customize pressurized sand filters that meet the highest water clarification requirements, both in drinking water treatment plants, desalination facilities, and industrial applications. Our equipment is engineered to:

  • remove suspended solids, turbidity, and fine particles before downstream processes such as reverse osmosis or ultrafiltration,

  • operate reliably under pressure conditions, and

  • adapt to demanding technical environments (seawater, brackish water, industrial wastewater).

Filtration using granular media—silica, anthracite, multilayer beds—stands as a key stage in polishing or pretreatment processes. As specialized sources point out, this type of technology is used in drinking water treatment plants (DWTP) and in tertiary treatment processes at wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) to ensure the quality of the treated water.

Our sand filters can be manufactured in carbon steel or stainless steel, selected according to operating conditions and the filtration medium.
We design our equipment to operate at pressures of up to 10 bar, making them ideal for filtration processes prior to reverse osmosis or other high-demand stages.

In addition, the geometry (vertical or horizontal) is adapted to the available space and the type of installation. For example, in some desalination projects, horizontal filters have been supplied for high flow rates.

The selection of the filter media is critical: we use optimally graded silica, anthracite, or multilayer solutions (for example, anthracite + sand + garnet) to maximize filtration efficiency and optimize head loss. As described in technical literature, the arrangement of the bed by density and particle size has a direct impact on process effectiveness.

Thanks to proper hydraulic design—upper distributors and a well-dimensioned backwash chamber—we achieve continuous operation with reduced maintenance.

A key aspect of this type of filter is cleaning the filter media. The backwash system prevents bed saturation, reduces flow loss, and extends the equipment’s service life. This mechanism ensures that accumulated particles are removed and the filtration capacity is restored without dismantling the system.

    • Rated pressure up to 10 bar, depending on the model and material.

    • Optimized filter media: silica, anthracite, or multilayer beds.

    • Automatic or manual backwashing, configurable according to operational requirements.

    • Anti-corrosion casing, ideal for marine environments, desalination, brackish water, or aggressive industrial processes.

    • Vertical and horizontal configurations, modular and easy to integrate into plants.

    • Optional: full automation via electric or pneumatic valves, digital control, and pressure and flow sensors.

    • Compliance with applicable design, manufacturing, and quality standards for water treatment.

    • Drinking water treatment plants (DWTP): as a fine clarification stage before final treatment.

    • Desalination plants (SWRO/WWTP): in seawater or brackish water pretreatment, ensuring turbidity and solids removal before membranes.

    • Industrial processes: process water, cooling, and reuse systems where particle-free water quality is required.

    • Pre-filtration before membrane stages: ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis.

    • Tertiary treatment applications: situations requiring fine clarification prior to discharge or reuse.

  • Custom Design: We tailor each unit to the client’s specific needs in terms of flow rate, water type, technical requirements, and available space.

  • Technical Expertise: We combine knowledge in pressure equipment manufacturing with water process engineering.

  • Operational Reliability: High-quality materials, robust valves, efficient backwash systems, and optimized maintenance.

  • Sustainability: Through efficient filter media and intelligent operational systems, we help reduce energy consumption and backwash volume.

  • Complete Integration: We provide everything from design, manufacturing, and supply to installation guidance, commissioning, and maintenance support.

At I’mWATER, we position ourselves as your strategic partner for the success of your water treatment project. Our technical team is ready to assist you with:

  • Sizing the sand filter (flow rate, filtration area, pressure, type of media).

  • Selecting the most suitable materials and configuration for the environment (seawater, brackish water, wastewater, or drinking water).

  • Defining the maintenance strategy, including backwash schedules, spare parts, and cycle optimization.

  • Managing installation and commissioning, ensuring technical compliance, timelines, and reliability.
